Bodidata’s Kora: Revolutionizing 3D Body Scanning with Fusion AI

Written by Bodidata | Apr 30, 2025 3:00:00 PM

In the evolving landscape of deep tech, innovation continues to  reshape industries - and body measurement is no exception. At Bodidata, we’ve developed Kora, a mobile 3D body scanner that seamlessly integrates Fusion AI to deliver unparalleled accuracy and convenience in body measurement—all while the individual remains fully clothed in streetwear.

Kora: A Compact Powerhouse in 3D Body Scanning

Traditional body scanning solutions have long required expensive, bulky hardware and controlled environments. Kora disrupts this norm by being ultra-light, compact, and fully mobile. Designed to attach securely to an Apple iPad Pro using an Otter iPad cover, Kora locks in place with precision. Connectivity is effortless with Bluetooth pairing, ensuring a smooth, wireless integration with the iPad Pro’s processing power.

Despite its small form factor, Kora delivers exceptional performance. Unlike conventional scanners that require minimal clothing or special scanning environments, Kora scans individuals fully clothed in everyday streetwear and extracts precise body surface measurements underneath the garments. This unique capability is made possible by the power of Bodidata’s Fusion AI platform.

Fusion AI: The Intelligence Behind Kora's Precision

At the heart of Kora’s innovation lies Fusion AI, an advanced artificial intelligence system that digitally reconstructs a user’s body shape beneath their clothing. Bodidata’s iOS App and cloud-based Fusion AI Platform leverage the iPad Pro’s built-in camera and LiDAR optical depth sensor, along with the Millimeter Wave Radar sensors inside the Kora scanner, to fuse data from multiple sensor types. This cutting-edge approach allows Fusion AI to generate an accurate 3D body avatar with exceptional precision.

How Sensor Fusion Works:

  • Millimeter Wave Radar sensors send signals that penetrate clothing and bounce off the water molecules on the surface of the human body. This allows Bodidata to calculate the depth or distance from the radar sensors to the individual's skin.
  • Apple's LiDAR sensor captures the depth or distance from the LiDAR sensor to the clothing surface.
  • By synchronizing the LiDAR and Millimeter Wave signals, Bodidata’s Fusion AI Platform effectively eliminates any clothing worn by the individual, ensuring an accurate reconstruction of the body underneath.

Unlike large and stationary airport TSA scanners that also use Millimeter Wave Radar sensors to penetrate clothing, a key challenge for a small form factor mobile radar scanner is the sparse radar data and difficulty in determining the exact position of the radar sensors in 3D space relative to the measurement target. Bodidata has overcome this challenge through innovative mechanical design and sophisticated algorithms that synchronize and process optical and radar data together—fusing them to create a complete and precise recreation of the body surface underneath the clothing, resulting in an accurate avatar representation of the subject's body.

Bodidata set out to eliminate the friction of asking an individual to be scanned in their undergarment or tight-fitting clothing. Traditional scanning solutions often require individuals to change into minimal attire, which can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, or impractical. In many regions of the world, asking someone to undress into minimal clothing is not possible or taboo.

This clothing-related friction affects all optical-based scanners. While many solutions claim they can compensate for clothing using data and AI; this is very difficult to achieve with accuracy for different body shapes and clothing styles. Clothing drapes differently over human bodies depending on design factors such as cut, fabric, body shape, and movement—even the same clothing drapes differently on the same body at different times. Bodidata’s Kora removes this friction by leveraging its multi-sensor Fusion AI technology, ensuring accurate body measurements without relying solely on optical estimations.

Bodidata knows the limitations of optical-based solutions very well because we have developed two optical solutions ourselves:

  1. Video with LiDAR solution using an iPhone Pro.
  2. A 2-photo solution using any smartphone, which presents an additional challenge of relying on 2D data to recreate a 3D human body. Bodidata owns the original 2-photo patent, further solidifying its leadership in the body scanning space.

Through this experience, we understand the challenges of optical-only approaches, which is why Fusion AI integrates multiple sensor types to achieve unmatched precision and reliability. This technique is Bodidata’s proprietary intellectual property and is protected by patents already granted in all major markets.

This breakthrough in Deep Tech eliminates the barriers of traditional scanning methods, allowing for:

  • Effortless measurements in real-world environments.
  • Enhanced privacy as users remain fully clothed during scans.
  • Highly accurate body data applicable to multiple industries, including fashion, fitness, and healthcare.

Transforming Industries with Kora & Fusion AI

Kora’s impact spans multiple industries where precise body data is essential:

  1. Fashion & retail: Brands can offer personalized sizing recommendations, reducing return rates and improving the online shopping experience.
  2. Health & wellness: Fitness professionals can track body composition changes without invasive or time-consuming methods.
  3. Medical & ergonomics: Healthcare providers can use accurate body metrics and health history correlations for diagnostics, prosthetics, and ergonomic assessments.
